What is Catuai coffee
Meaning “very good” in Tupi-Guarani language in Brazil, Catuai coffee is an Arabica varietal (coffea arabica). It was developed in the early 40s in Brazil by cross breeding Red Caturra and Mundo Novo varietals in order to produce a better cup quality than the Caturra.
Catuai plant is unfortunately more prone to coffee rust and other coffee cherry diseases. The plant also needs more nutrients than other varietals. However, it is a smaller and denser plant known to be reliable, this means that with love and care, it will bring higher yield to the farmer. Also giving all the nutrients it needs by natural compost will bring even more sweetness making it a beautiful cup with well-balanced acidity and a taste of green tea, citrus and oats.
Officially introduced to the rest of the country only in the early 70s, it rapidly gained some notoriety and was also introduced to Guatemala accounting for a fifth of the it’s coffee production today. Following its success in Brazil and Guatemala, it was introduced a decade later to Honduras and Costa Rica.
50 years later, Catuai finally received the fame it deserves when in 2019 it was recognised as one of the best coffee in the world.
Our selected coffee comes from an award-winning social enterprise located in Ywa Ngan, Chan State, Myanmar. Part of a network of 6,000 farmers of the Danu tribe who have been farming their lands for generations, they formed a cooperative in 2012. Rich in Acrisols and at an altitude from 1,200 to 2,200m, the area is ideal for growing high quality arabica coffee.
The cooperative helped the farmers to improve growing, selecting and processing techniques but also to receive competitive compensation to provide for their families. The cooperative also contributes to the support of local education, healthcare and forestry efforts.
Until 2018, they were mostly selling their coffee within Myanmar and Cambodia where we came to know them. In 2020, they entrusted the distribution of their coffee through the UK and Europe. Through our partners, we are honored to bring to you arguably the best arabica coffee in Southeast Asia.
